U-Channels is often used in conjunction with I-beams and other steel products to build commercial and industrial buildings, such as warehouses. It can act as girts, studs, braces, joists or other structural components where the added strength of an I-beam is not necessary. European standard U channels are mainly used as braces for the steel structures in commerce and industry, and also used as horizontal or vertical member of small steel platforms or structures.
Steel channel is a versatile product that is available in many sizes and thicknesses. Its cross-section is shaped like a squared-off U, with a straight back and two perpendicular extensions on the top and bottom. The European standard U channels represent a broad product line of bar-shaped building elements with parallel internal surface of the flanges. A steel channel can be jointed, then it is welded or bolted, or warm manufactured, then it is hot rolled or extruded. Both side vertical part of the channel is called flange, the connecting horizontal part is called web.
